What you’ll do

  • Provide expert advice and consultation to the CW Senior Leadership Team with respect to identifying ongoing and emerging health needs and systemic health service barriers that the Indigenous women, youth, child and newborn population of B.C. experience, and develops strategies to address these issues.
  • Provide an Indigenous lens to CW programs to ensure program design and scope are fully inclusive of and culturally safe for Indigenous people and seek to address anti-Indigenous racism. Implements effective processes to assess project risks, identify risk mitigation strategies, and monitor risk throughout the project lifecycle. Compile, analyze, summarize, and communicate data to support program initiatives. Evaluate whether program objectives/milestones are met.
  • Provide strategic leadership and accountability for the planning, alignment, actions and evaluation of CW Indigenous Health Program services to advance Indigenous cultural safety of patients/families and staff. Ensure consistency with PHSA’s overall strategic plan, Truth and Reconciliation recommendations, PHSA Indigenous Health strategy, the Tri-partite Health plan, and provincial mandates to improve the health of Indigenous women, youth, children, newborns and their families.
  • Ensure Agency, Board, Ministry, and other reporting requirements are maintained such as identifying and tracking metrics as they relate to the deliverables of Tripartite First Nations Health Plan.
  • Provide leadership and representation of CW Indigenous Health at CW health planning and policy development boards/committees for Indigenous patients and their families. Collaborates with the Director, Indigenous Health, PHSA, First Nations Health Authority and the Indigenous Health lead at each Health Authority to improve access to health programs serving Indigenous populations throughout British Columbia.
  • Consult and collaborate with Indigenous agencies, organizations and community groups to address women’s health issues and establish strategies for strengthening community capacity, especially those pertaining to patients and their families.
  • Lead and direct the provincial Indigenous women, youth, children and newborn health strategies, utilizing provincial strategies to establish priorities in the CW Indigenous Health Program.
  • Develop and maintain key partnerships with relevant health agencies, educational facilities, and Indigenous communities and groups.

 

What you bring

 

Qualifications

  • A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Masters degree in a relevant discipline, such as Indigenous studies, nursing, population and public health, epidemiology, health psychology, or sociology, with a minimum of ten (10) years of recent, related experience working with Indigenous communities in a hospital or public health care, including eight (8) years at a senior management/leadership level and significant Indigenous health-focused experience.

 

Skills & Knowledge

 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian colonial impacts on Indigenous people in social and health contexts, supported by significant knowledge of Canadian and Indigenous ideologies, including knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultural safety, cultural humility, Indigenous-specific racism and anti-racism.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), In Plain Sight, Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls calls for justice, and other related policies and reports.
  • Knowledge and respect of Indigenous approaches to health and wellbeing, Indigenous cultural traditions, ceremonies, protocols, traditional wellness practices.
  • Lived experience with Indigenous populations and demonstrated extensive knowledge of Indigenous health care needs, services, and issues
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and maintain collaborative working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated facilitation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work respectfully, knowledgeably and effectively with Indigenous people.
  • Strong conceptual and policy-oriented skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex ideas and information.
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively problem-solve with a global perspective in order to incorporate the organization’s systems and strategies when developing viable solutions to problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish courses of action for self and others that are results oriented.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change and to build and manage teams.
  • Experience in negotiating, facilitating, building consensus, and effectively collaborating to build relationships that promote the achievement of cooperative goals and contribute to an atmosphere of mutual respect.
  • Ability to operate relevant equipment including word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.
  • Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents – including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study – and how they intersect across the health care system.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time
Salary Range: 
$116,591 - $167,600/year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
