Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of the Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Within the context of a client service culture and under general supervision, acts as a member of an integrated care team by performing multiple complex diagnostic ophthalmic imaging procedures and assessments utilizing advanced knowledge of digital-based photographic techniques in the clinical outpatient setting, operating room, NICU, PICU and other hospital areas under the direction of the Program Manager or designate.
Duties/Accountabilities:
The following typical duties and responsibilities are performed under the direction of the medical team: 1. Review requisitions, review and documents patient’s history, and verifies appropriateness of visual field and photographs to be taken in accordance to physician’s diagnosis, instruction and/or establish procedures. Identifies concerns to the physician regarding requisition discrepancies, patient condition, or other observations; implements requisition changes as directed. 2. Performs tests and procedures such as Goldmann field tests, automated perimetry, tonometry, tests for glaucoma, intraocular pressure monitoring, ocular motility assessments, pachymetry and macular function studies; analyzes, records, and reports relevant data for interpretation by physician. 3. Performs a variety of complex ophthalmic tests such as: a. fundus photography, b. fluorescein angiography (IVFA), c. slit lamp biomicrography, d. corneal topography, e. specular microscopy f. optical coherence tomography- (OCT), including Bioptigen handheld OCT g. Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OCT), including Bioptigen hand-held AS-OCT h. Pediatric retinal imaging Imaging which includes Fundus, IVFA, External and Goniography ie. RETCAM, ICON i. External photography and videography j. Surgical photography and videography k. Reteval or device for electroretinography l. B-scan Ultrasound, m. high frequency ultrasound (UBM) Analyzes, records and reports relevant data for interpretation by medical staff. 4. Evaluates, identifies and selects images to obtain the appropriate standards for diagnostic purposes. Processes and stores images into computerized database and/or permanent patient record. 5. Receives patients arriving in the area, records relevant patient information, explains procedures to patients for a variety of diagnostic ophthalmic tests and assessment procedures and answers related question. Schedules patients for diagnostic and clinical treatments as required. 6. Demonstrates ophthalmic testing procedures and operation of related equipment as required. 7. Monitors equipment performance, identifies malfunctions, takes corrective action and/or refers for repair as appropriate. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies. 8. Provides input to Manager or designate for the development, implementation and review of Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives, policies, procedures, standards, and new imaging technologies utilized in the work place. 9. Communicates issues, unusual occurrences or equipment malfunctions, to Manager (or designate) and/or physician as appropriate. 10. Participates in the orientation and education of new and casual staff as required. 11. Participates in departmental rounds/meetings and promotes clinical research within the department as required. 12. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
Graduation from a recognized program in ophthalmic technology, plus two years recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
