Job Summary:

Reporting to the Team Lead, the Laboratory Assistant II performs duties related to specimen processing and blood collection, including preparing and planting specimens, entering patient and specimen information into the computerized laboratory information system, packaging and sending specimens to other laboratories utilizing the Transport of Dangerous Goods (TDG) procedures, venipuncture, and preparing and maintaining staining solutions. Performs clerical duties such as answering telephones, filing and maintaining supplies.
Duties/Accountabilities:
3.1 Gathers and prepares specimens for processing and analysis by performing duties such as sorting, prioritizing, verifying patient and specimen identification, obtaining and entering demographic, clinical and additional information as required into the computerized laboratory information system.
3.2 Processes specimens as required by performing duties such as separating serum/plasma, centrifuging, planting/plating specimens, and sub-culturing broths according to established procedures.
3.3 Packages and sends specimens and cultures to other laboratories utilizing the established Transport of Dangerous Goods (TDG) procedures.
3.4 Stores and disposes of specimens and cultures according to established procedures.
3.5 Enters results and other data into the computerized laboratory information system, and distributes or communicates results according to procedure or as direction by the Medical Pathologist, Team Lead or Supervisor.
3.6 Performs venipunctures and micro blood collection on adults, children and babies.
3.7 Prepares and maintains staining solutions, and performs staining procedures.
3.8 Maintains supplies for the specimen processing area, processes supply requisitions, and stocks supplies.
3.9 Performs clerical duties such as answering the telephone, filing, tracking and distributing communications to appropriate staff and physicians as required.
3.10 Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
2.1 Education, Training, and Experience
Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program, plus one year’s recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
2.2 Skills and Abilities
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to deal with others effectively.
• Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
• Ability to organize work.
• Ability to operate related equipment.
• Ability to keyboard at 25 w.p.m.
