Job Summary:

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.  The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) coordinates staffing coverage and provides supervision, guidance and expert clinical support to the nursing and support staff within the Acute Perinatal (Antepartum (AP), Postpartum (PP), Birthing (BP)) Program.  Supervision will be consistent with established policies, standards of practice and philosophy at BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1.    Supervises the work of nurses and support staff. Promotes adherence to professional and clinical nursing standards by modelling professional practice, encouraging dialogue about practice and monitoring practice to identify learning needs. Teaches, coaches and guides staff as they increase their knowledge and skills and acts as a resource during a critical event as required.

2.    Acts as a resource to help coordinate the activities of the area by communicating and planning with the unit based charge nurses and primary care providers as required.  Assists with bed allocation for admitted patients for direct or emergency admissions.

3.    Monitors hospital utilization by overseeing activity within the different areas of the programs through regular unit based rounds. Coordinates the use of staff, dependent on utilization/resource requirements and adjusts staffing levels to match workload by calling in or reassigning staff to other units.

4.    Resolves problems utilizing the nursing process related to patient care to ensure quality patient care.  Confers with physicians, families and departments within the Hospital on questions related to nursing practice and hospital policy.

5.    Ensures that equipment for the program is available as required. Conducts monthly safety inspection and initiates maintenance request as required. Reports deficiencies to the appropriate manager.

6.    Maintains a safe environment for women, families and staff by following established emergency procedures and safety practices.

7.    Provides input to the AP/PP/Birthing Leadership Team into the development, implementation and evaluation of the program’s patient care standards and policies and procedures.

8.    Participates in quality improvement initiatives through activities such as immediate follow up on incidents concerning staff or patients by investigating and collecting data and is responsible for the completion of PSLS events related to incidents as assigned.  

9.    Promotes the implementation and evaluation of nursing research and quality monitoring activities.  Keeps, current through attendance at education and in-service opportunities.

10.    Provides information to the program coordinators/managers regarding staffing and equipment needs for budget planning purposes.

11.    Performs other professionally related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
•  Five (5) years of recent perinatal experience including a minimum of one (1) year’s recent, related experience in a supervisory/leadership capacity or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Current CPR/NRP certification.
• Fetal Health Assessment certification (BCWH or equivalent).
