Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Reporting to the Program Manager and in collaboration with the Medical Director of Neurology, the Nurse Clinician ensures the delivery of nursing practice activities such as patient assessment, nursing staff and patient/family education, and health promotion activities for children and adolescents with neurological disorders and is responsible for assigning direct care responsibilities to other staff in accordance with established policies, standards, procedures and philosophy at British Columbia Children’s Hospital and CRNBC. The Nurse Clinician is the key health care professional in advocating for and maintaining optimal physical and psychosocial health of this patient population with accountability for development, monitoring, and effectiveness of patient services provided.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1.Oversees the delivery of care for the neurology patient population by coordinating patient care delivery, ensuring provision of direct patient care for patients, making adjustments in patient assignments/schedules with accountability for follow-up and patient outcomes.
2.Initiates and coordinates assessment and post assessment referrals; responds to patient, family, and health care member’s enquiries; and liaises with other support and diagnostic health services in coordinating patient referrals.
3.Collaborates with nursing staff, medical staff, health care disciplines, and community agencies to plan patient care in the clinic and community setting.
4.Promotes and implements teaching for patients, families, and other care team members regarding the various neurological disorders, complications, and modes of management as well as health maintenance and health promotion.
5.Acts as clinical nursing resource in identifying and providing education for patients, families, nursing staff, health care professionals, community agencies/services, and schools, providing information based on specialized theory and practice.
6.Participates in the orientation and continuing education of nursing staff and students by role modeling, preceptoring and participation in formal teaching of education sessions through lecture and demonstration and evaluation to ensure that materials have been learned correctly.
7.Consults with educational resources, both in-house and external in developing and implementing continuing education and professional nursing practice development for BC Children’s Hospital nursing staff and other hospital and community health professionals related to pediatric neurology.
8.Plans and develops educational resources such as pamphlets and patient teaching tools for patient, family, and professional health education for pediatric neurology in consultation with other team members.
9.Leads and participates as a member of the health care team in facilitating patient care reviews and conferences.
10.Provides input to the Program Manager or delegate and participates in the development of policies, procedures/standards and operational requirements by observing service needs and providing spoken or written suggestions which address patient and family needs and promote effective use of resources. Is accountable for the monitoring and effectiveness of policies and standards related to the care needs of this specialized neurology patient population.
11.Identifies and implements appropriate resolutions to ethical issues/concerns relating to patients and families in consultation with the multidisciplinary team.
12.Promotes and participates in the implementation and evaluation of nursing research and quality improvement activities as directed by participating in committee work and by keeping current with the literature and through attendance at education and in-service opportunities.
13.Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
• Three (3) to five (5) years recent related clinical nursing experience including ambulatory care experience and/or community health care experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• CPR – basic level 1

• Physical abilities to perform duties of the job.
