Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reporting to the Shift Engineer, is responsible for the effective and efficient operation and maintenance of the steam and mechanical building systems on the Oak Street Site and other sites as required. Assists the Shift Engineer in the operation of the Steam Plant and the steam, water and medical gas distribution systems as required.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Makes rounds to mechanical rooms and penthouses to ensure that the mechanical and HVAC equipment is operating normally and efficiently.
2. Checks system operating conditions and adjusts equipment controls to maintain proper operation.
3. Checks operation of medical air systems and records reading of medical air and medical gases including bulk oxygen and nitrous oxide.
4. Carries out emergency repairs, mainly after hours and on weekends, when tradesmen are not available.
5. Performs preventive maintenance work as assigned by the Steam Plant or HVAC Supervisors.
6. Evaluates and investigates equipment malfunctions and carries out repairs or makes work orders for the tradesmen.
7. Monitors and operates the Deltanet Graphic automated building control system.
8. Operates and maintains the Translogic Pneumatic Tube System (Transitube System).
9. Responds to elevator calls to assist people during elevator malfunctions. Informs the Shift Engineer of elevator problems and requests call-in of the elevator serviceman.
10. Responds to emergency and other service calls and makes adjustments to heating and cooling controls.
11. Maintains records, log sheets and log books. Takes month end and period utility meter readings for statistical reports.
12. Maintains radio communication with the Security Department and responds to fire alarm calls.
13. Assists the Shift Engineer with the operation of the Steam Plant as required.
14. In case of an electrical power failure, checks the operation of the emergency diesel generators and takes readings of pressures and temperatures.
15. Performs other related duties.
16. Ensures that assigned area is maintained at a high standard of safety and cleanliness.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
Fourth Class Inter-Provincial Power Engineering Certification or higher as recognized by the BC Safety Authority and incompliance with all regulatory Acts and Codes. Two (2) years’ recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to deal with others effectively. Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position. Must be computer literate and be capable of operating modern building management systems. Ability to organize work. Ability to operate related equipment.
