Job Summary

Salary Range: $88,990-$127,923/year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.


Job Summary:

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.   The Environmental Health & Knowledge Translation Scientist provides expertise, surveillance and investigation of environmental health and will work on assigned knowledge synthesis translation and exchange (KSTE) projects where research findings are assessed and synthesized to provide an evidence base for environmental health policies or practices.

Duties:


• Conduct literature reviews and synthesizing complex environmental health research findings pertaining to environmental public health areas including but not limited to food safety, personal services establishments, drinking water and recreational water facilities, environmental contaminants and hazards, climate change, emergency preparedness response and environmental health considerations in recovery phase, linkages to and within the built environment (e.g., neighbourhood design, transportation networks, natural environments, food systems, and housing).

• Create knowledge translation resources for practice and policy-making in environmental public health that can be tailored and contextualized to specific public health audiences. Resources represent a variety of formats including but not be limited to: evidence reviews, evidence briefs, blog articles, fact sheets, peer-reviewed journal articles, responses to external consultations and inquiries, webinar presentations, and other media formats (e.g., scripts for short animated videos).

• Mobilize NCCEH outputs through multiple channels - e.g., conferences, meetings, external webinars, guest lectures at academic institutions, social media channels (NCCEH; personal professional accounts).

• Build networks and collaborations to augment capacity building for public health systems.

• Contribute to ongoing continuous improvement efforts. Activities include: needs assessment surveys, key informant interviews, internal and external evaluations, work progress tracking of output and other metrics; year-end reporting as required by the Public Health Agency of Canada (funder).

 

Qualifications:

A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to Master of Science in a discipline related to Environmental Health plus five (5) years’ of recent, related experience.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, including the ability to work independently and as a team member.  Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with internal and multiple stakeholders.  Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work, multi-task, work under time pressures to meet deadlines and handle interruptions and changing priorities.  Demonstrated superior level of accuracy, initiative, attention to detail, and independent error checking.  Demonstrated knowledge and ability to utilize related equipment including a variety of computerized software packages such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database applications, and internet applications at an advanced level.  Demonstrated ability to navigate and research information on-line (internet and intranet).  French language skills are an asset.
